Meet the team
We're Kaylee and Ben.
We started pottery back in 2019 at the Westminster Rec Center and were instantly hooked. Fast forward to 2022, we moved to Parker, eager to find a studio and keep the pottery dream alive. We were disappointed to find that there weren't really any studios nearby.
Seeing how bummed I was about putting this newfound passion on hold, Ben built a pottery studio in our basement. I kept creating on my own, but something was missing. Sharing stories with a new friend at a neighboring wheel, commiserating when a wobbly creation takes a nosedive, or brainstorming glaze combinations with someone who's experimented with them all - that's the magic I craved again. So we made this space for potters in Parker. We hope you love it!

I am the current Sculpture and beginning Ceramics teacher at the local High School. I have been in Parker for the majority of my life, went to schooling here, graduated from college and returned here to live and be a permanent part of the community. I have seen the Parker community expand into being an up-and-coming hub.
Art has always been the passion that I had. I have always found that art feeds my soul and has been a part of my self-expression for years. I found that in my personal practice I am exploring joy in creation by diving head first into the human experience. Living life is a true art form; so how do I capture those joys into something physical? In my ceramics, joy comes from oversized organic pots, and mugs inspired by the natural world.

Bitten by the ceramic bug in high school, I continued my art education at the local art center. Soon I was helping in the studio, loading kilns, making clay, and mixing glazes. Eventually I taught classes and was selling my work at art festivals. I felt teaching was my calling, so I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts and became a professor. Now retired from that position, I am full circle, enjoying the material of clay and teaching at Community Mud. If you would like to know more about me and my artwork, my website is ConiferSmith.com.

Originally from Cincinnati, I have called Colorado home since 1996 when my husband and I packed up three children and moved to Denver to experience the greatness of the west! After getting the kids through school and college, I found myself an empty nester with nothing but time! In 2015 I took a pottery class, and the addiction began! After taking classes, I found myself needing more studio time and freedom and ultimately created my own home studio where I am primarily a handbuilder. In 2018 we became snowbirds, and I had the joy of running a pottery studio and teaching both wheel throwing and handbuilding in Arizona. The warm climate and scenic surroundings added an extra layer of inspiration to my classes and pottery. I consider my style to be “Modern Rustic" as so much of my inspiration comes from nature.

I’m an artist and clay lover originally from Houston, Texas, but moved to Colorado in 2023. I earned my BFA and MFA in studio art with a multi-media approach in clay, painting and printmaking. I love it all! My ceramics work focuses on hand built altar boxes inspired by nature, mental health and womanhood, in addition to some new works of functional pottery. I love the medium of clay for its tactile nature and the ability to “play in the mud”. I’m so happy to join Community Mud teaching handbuilding and sharing a love for pottery!
What People Are Saying
“Love trying something new and Community Mud was amazing. I had never worked with clay, so having no experience, I can say I learned so much and they really teach you the basics that you can build on. The hand building class was great! The studio is organized and clean. My next class will be wheel throwing and I plan on joining the monthly membership so I can continue to learn and create. Oh and also the owner and staff are wonderful!”
